Cruising Speed

I think all photographers hit a wall, mine was at about 40 years old, maybe it’s all people who hit a wall. Mine was constantly evaluating where I was going and what the future might hold, it was clear 1992 through 1997 my photography was good, I was getting the assignments and making good pictures and they where syndicating and selling well. However there was a sea of change in the industry, digital was replacing analog, it was predicted that digital cameras would replace film cameras, agencies where being consolidated and conventional film archives where being buried in the desert. Personally my wall was also the days I could work (about 250 a year) what my fees would be editorially and the growing restriction of access to celebrities. I also think this restriction of access to celebrities was the birth of Paparazzi in the USA. I have two children and my wife and I would be paying for their education into my 60’s. There was only one me and I was not getting any younger, it was time for a widget. Out of nowhere in the early 90’s I grasped digital, html, the World Wide Web, its implications in our industry (not quite out of nowhere one of my main clients was a publication called “Information Week” it was a monthly IT bible, they would present seminars that I would photograph, speeches and lectures given by Michael Dell, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates, Philip Khan (he invented the camera in a cell phone). I would photograph these people and then get them to myself, much to their irritation and ask them questions about coding, binary, html, packet technology, compressions and on and on. That knowledge persuaded me in 1992 to purchase a Macintosh Quadra, a black and white 170 power book, a 0,000 Nikon scanner and a 9600 baud modem. In 1994 I started in partnership with Brad Elterman www.onlineusa.com one of the first fully digital photo-agencies concentrating on celebrities with an online searchable archive, initially delivered by a BBS system called Telefinder later to become fully html with an SQL database, Getty Images purchased www.onlineusa.com in 1999.
